What is a google bot and what is it doing here? I just noticed at the bottom of a page where it tells who's online, it said I was here and guest: google - bot. Is it scanning the site for our info, is this dangerous?

Hopefully someone else can explain it, but I've seen it on here for the last 8 months or so. I think its harmless but I'm not computer savvy in the least ;)

It's probably the Google search engine crawler indexing content from the bbs. It's harmless.

Yep, you got it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googlebot

Web bot, Web crawler, Web spider, Search indexer. Without them indexing content or 'crawling the web' we would have a hard time finding what we want when using Google, Bing or whatever search engine you use. They are also the reason we should think before posting anything (text, images, videos, etc) on the internet. Some search bots can have your comments indexed within just a few seconds of it being posted. Once content is indexed it's also cached so even if you go back and edit or even delete something it can still be found and viewed by searching the Google Cache.

Yep. Search engine bots are a very normal part of the web. They're just doing their job. Indexing web content. You don't see them most places but on a forum you can often see them listed in the who's online box(s).

If you have a web site you can also prevent the bots from indexing your site.

Robots.txt - Like Search Bot, it only sounds bad.

A robots.txt file is a text file that stops web crawler software, such as Googlebot, from crawling certain pages of your site.
