Back when Borders / Waldenbooks still existed, you could get gift certificates for them by taking surveys on the site. One day when I was in a Borders store, the gal gave me a flier telling me about the site and how I could earn points for the certificates. I remember being so stoked when I got my first paper checks in the mail from doing something on the 'world wide web'. That was over 15 years ago!
