My husband's uncle would doodle ideas on paper and then start the process of getting a prototype rigged up, testing, and then getting a patent on the product. He didn't use kickstarter anything, just his own money, but he made a very decent living off of his inventions. I mentioned a type of umbrella to him once and he raised his hand to stop me and produced the umbrella that he created 20 years prior.
