Useless
No, some of them don't seem to be. Read some posts on this forum and you'll see complaints about somebody getting their account suspended just before he got to the pay threshold. Many of us suspect that some companies disqualify people at the end of a survey so they get their data without paying the survey taker, but that's hard to prove. This site has a place where sites are rated by the survey takers - Top Survey Sites. Read about a few of those and see what looks interesting. You'll probably end up joining a few, dumping those that don't work for you, then trying a couple new ones here and there.

"so they get their data without paying the survey taker, but that's hard to prove.". My daughter says that and she does not do surveys. I have told her the problem. I agree. Splice
My personal opinion on the legitimacy of survey sites is that more than 90% are performing very well till the panelist near the threshold. Suddenly, without any changes to their profiles, screen-outs and disqualification becomes the norm. I suggest that you do thorough research on survey panels before you join and take note of the small print...
