Pay Pal is asking me to send them my tax ID

This is the first time I have had survey rewards deposited at pay pal.  They just sent me an email that they need my tax ID.  They also said that if I make over $600 on surveys, where the rewards get sent to my pay pal account, they will send me a 1099.  If I don't send them a tax ID then once I hit $600, they will send 25% of what ever is over the $600 to the IRS.  I thought somebody here said that the IRS starting for 2025. will raise the amount of paypal  you can make to $2,000 before you have to declare it on your tax return.

I think I remember having to give them my SSN a few years ago and if I didn't they would close my account I was a little skeptical but I ended up doing it

Well it sounds like they are asking for my tax ID, but it is only after I make $600 through pay pal, that they will do anything if I don't give it to them.  I  had to log into my pay pal account today because I had $25 that came from Lifepoint that I had to approve, and then ask them to transfer the money to my checking account.  When I logged into my account today, they reminded me that they needed my tax ID.  I have only deposited $101 in pay pal so far.  I had another $100 from Branded deposited directly into my checking account.  I will just wait and see if I get any where close to $600.  When I cash out with YouGov, it can go directly into my checking account, and Clear Voice only issues Amazon GC.

That may be why I have not received such a request. My account is a higher level one as I used to sell on eBay. May have had to provide that info back then (20+ years ago). I never have to approve deposits.

I asked someone who had dealt with Paypal for years and he said that at one point it was $400 earned and then they reported it, but during the pandemic everything went awry and they didn't bother with it. But things may have changed now.  I don't know how comfortable I am with them having my SS#.  I am trying to take gift cards as much as I can now days, but with Prolific, I don't have a choice.

I wish Prolific would offer Amazon Cards

Is Paypal asking you for your SS number or is the survey site asking for it? Typically Paypal wants your SS number just to open an account with them. This is normal. However, it is NOT normal for a survey company to request your SS and I'd never trust a survey company with that info.

A couple years ago, Biden implemented a new rule that anything over $600 into your Paypal in a given tax year, would trigger a 1099K tax form to be reported to the IRS. Then, it was delayed and switched to a $5,000 limit for this tax year (2024). Currently, the $600 rule is still set to start for the year 2025, but there is a lot of Republican backlash on it and I wouldn't be surprised if Trump reverses it. A $600 limit for Paypal income to be taxed is ridiculous in my opinion.

Paypal is asking for it.  I think I first signed up with paypal in 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic.  I don't remember giving them my SS number, and if I had they would not need it now.  If the limit if $5,000 for 2024, I don't understand why they would start withholding taxes if I hit $600, and did not send them my SS number.  $600 is now very much.  Branded and YouGov, I can have them send it directly to my checking account.  Maybe next year, I will ask for an Albertson's GC if that is available, but does anybody have any idea how it gets sent to you?  I won a $60 Albertson's GC from Quaker last December, and I tried to pull it up on my phone and use it last night, and it would not scan.  I still have $46 on the card.

At any rate, there's nothing wrong with giving them your I.D. I gave them my SS number 20-something years ago, and the account ended up dormant for well over ten years, and I never had any trouble or any of the crookery you'd expect with a dormant account, but no, none of that. I think they're pretty safe, especially since you're initiating a change in dealing with them that would require something like that.

Yeah, Paypal requesting that info is normal. They are most likely preparing for 2025, when the $600 max rule is supposed to start. As long as you are using a secured server and going directly to the Paypal website (and not via some link), you can generally trust paypal with that info, although nothing is 100% safe anymore.

I pray that $600 reporting rule won't actually go through, but we probably won't know til end of 2025 if the govt chooses to go through with it.
