Detecting telemarketers using survey companies as sources

I have a simple method for learning whether or not survey companies are selling my info to telemarketers. If you do not like the telemarketing calls, which are often generated through survey companies, here is how to tell who sold your information: If your name is, say: John Thomas Smith, then give it to one company as James Smith, the next as Thomas Smith, the next as Jim Smith, the next as J.T. Smith,  THEN keep track of it.  Whatever your name is, you can come up with these variations. I know of more than one company which swears they do not sell info to telemarketers, but which does, as the telemarketers have a particular variation of my name on file.
