What is a reasonable time to wait to be paid?

if they say 6 weeks, then 6 weeks. I prefer to deal with most companies head on with a week of email...say 1 a day for a week making that the conclusion of the 7th week. After that, i would look for a phone number. i would say preference various by poster however.
